Succession plan: Craig Peden has been an owner in the family businesses since he started working with his father, Paul Peden, at age 21.
The Pedens are successful operators of Rib City, a chain of barbecue restaurants with 29 locations, and the upscale Veranda restaurant in downtown Fort Myers.
“Philosophically, it’s not a good idea to leave your kids with a lot of money,” says Paul Peden, 65.

Long-running Veranda remains in a class of its own
There’s been a great deal of attention focused upon downtown Fort Myers of late owing to the proliferation of new dining and drinking establishments, the water basin and the trolley that trundles throughout the district.
But as the New Year approached, I caught myself humming “Auld Lang Syne” and thinking about what the song means. The lyrics, penned by Scottish poet Robert Burns, remind us to stay in touch with our memories, of people and times past but still worthy of thought and caring.
